Photographer and gentleman. Shoots celebrities and fashion, but really does a good dog―and really IS a good human. For the past several years, Richard has devoted a big chunk of his work life to finding all of these sweet souls a home. Working with the Humane Society of New York, he goes into a tiny examination room to take arresting and compassionate portraits of these scared little creatures who need to be seen to be loved. And he has been relentless: Of the 180+ dogs Richard has photographed, the majority have found a second chance at life in a new home thanks to his brilliant photographs.
Sebastian Mader and Natasha Royt teamed up with Paul Ritter of Glamour magazine to produce these stunning images for the June 2014 issue.
Gizmo is seen in the last picture and when Kyoko took his picture he knew exactly where to be. As she says about animals, "I think I have a healthy relationship with animals in general. When I grew up in Japan, we had tadpoles, crayfish, koi fish, a pet hamster with one arm, pet squirrels (different than American squirrels), turtles, cats and a dog. My view of animals changed slightly though when I saw wild lions in South Africa up close. I knew instinctively this big orange cat can take me down with one swipe. It gave me much more respect for the wilderness."
And in 2003 she shot her friend's cats, Sasha and Digweed, named after the famous DJ. Maybe Elinor, after seeing so many pictures of dogs, will want one now.
Before we get too carried away with dogs, I did want to say that the occasional cat, bird, elephant, rabbit, or African Pygmy Hedgehog might appear! But this cat, aka, Brigitte Lacombe's Studio Cat is one of my favorites.
I just got back from the most exquisite vacation I have ever been on in the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. I came to meet a dog friend that I had met on Instagram who, it turns out, had also worked at Glamour magazine but in the UK. Kate Matheson is now at Zapata Ranch, a working on a ranch in Southern Colorado.
I first saw Fetch & Follow while I was on Lara Stone's instagram feed and these adorable dog treats popped up! I had to know more! The owners, Taneale and Genesta, became friends through their love of dogs and Fetch & Follow was founded when they struggled to find dog products which were natural and ethical, but also captured the fun personalities of their dogs.
I visited Amy Harlow and her store Wag Wear in the Village. She built this store years ago when she had two dogs and needed great things for her dogs that she couldn't find. "It's all about great accessories" says Amy. She takes pride in saying that if she were a dog, this is what she would wear. We decided to model Wag Wear on Payton, a sweet one year Dutch Shepard Mix, who is great with other dogs.
Kyle Landman is a dear friend who I know through Maria Cornejo and Marysia Woroniecka. Here she tells of her dog, Michael, and the journey to adopting him! "After being on the hunt for the “unicorn” of all dogs—a black, longhaired Brussels Griffon—my brother-in-law sent me a message with a picture of the cutest, bug-eyed, hairy fluff ball staring back at me. The message read: “This is Mikey. He needs a home, now. And a haircut.”
This guy knows how to illustrate. I mean, I LOVE Jean-Philippe Delhomme's drawings and when I saw on his Instagram feed that he had a dog, I flipped.
This is Uggie. And this is Moreno with Sebastian on a shoot. Sebastian took Uggie's portrait during his performance in THE ARTIST. Sebastian says of Mrs. Sizzle's site, " Moreno will be so psyched to be on there. All I can say is that when Moreno comes to studio shoots, he gets more attention than the models. But he's also great help on set, he makes sure everyone is focused on creating great pics!" Thanks Sebastian!
Donut is usually for scale, Monty is just handsome. And Donald likes to draw.
We came across Chaity and Riley on Instagram as she takes the most heartwarming pictures of her Parson French Canadian dog. Chaity got Riley a year after being diagnosed with a pretty debilitating illness and he quickly became her inspiration and muse during her treatments and recovery. A former art director, Chaity's photographs of Riley began as a hobby, but he quickly became “insta-famous.” Now, Chaity and Riley use their instagram popularity to raise awareness and launch projects such as #ourpearlywhites which promotes Doggy Dental Hygiene. Besides Instagram, Riley and Chaity have launched their own accessory line on www.ichaity.com. Proceeds from these sales go to Chaity’s treatment and to The World Society for The Protection of Animals.
When I came across this amazing doggie brand I screamed, “WOOF for WOLF”! Based out of Montauk, LI, (lucky duck), Lindsey of Billy Wolf comes from a fashion background and brings that sensibility to all things dog. Check out this beautiful brand! Lindsey uses all vintage, American made fabrics to create these beautiful pieces. It being summer, you might opt for a denim bandana or great dog to toe instead! Check it out.
Or at least he did make it while I was there at the studio that day. So, I was nervous before the visit, that I might be the only dog owner in the world to have dogs, well not really, that like to jump up on people. It was just not so. Wegman's dogs do the same thing and his dogs are bigger than my dogs. This is what he says about two of them, "Topper is the biggest trouble maker. He sometimes bites Flo's back leg when Flo is introducing herself to visitors. He barks a lot. But he's a great dog." I loved being able to go meet the dogs.
Obsessed is all I have to say about these guys. One of the most remarkable Insta feeds I have seen and grown exponentially in the time that I followed them. Stephanie's love for photography grew after she adopted Gus. See Rescue to find out more!
Thank you Maria Bueno from Cheim Read Gallery for finding me this delicious photo of William Eggelston's.
