SH*T GIRLS SAY HAS GONE TO THE DOGS - and cats too

Graydon Sheppard and his furry friend

While I was at GLAMOUR Magazine years ago, a series of videos called SHIT GIRLS SAY created by Kyle Humphrey and Graydon Sheppard were released.  I found these especially hilarious as  one of the "so called" bosses in the video kept yelling "WHAT'S MY PASSWORD?", eerily reminiscent of what I used to sound like from my desk at Glamour .  Not only did it resonate with me but also with the rest of the country and became an instant viral sensation. Happily, in my new dog life I recently came across a series of animal videos that equally astonished me and I was able to reach out to Graydon Sheppard, the genius behind all of this furry fun and ask him a few Q's:

TELL ME ABOUT WHERE YOUR FASCINATION OF ANIMALS STEMS?

I think I love animals because I have horrible separation anxiety. I really want people/animals that ignore me to pay attention to me, and it’s really rewarding when they do, but then if they start to actually like me I’m like “Ugh, you’re kind of a loser person/lame animal, aren’t you?” Getting a chipmunk to eat out of my hands was the ultimate goal as a kid. But then if it started sticking around and hanging out too much I’d think “It probably has rabies."

DID YOU HAVE ANIMALS GROWING UP?

Yes! My mom and dad were smokers when I was a baby and so they had a Newfoundland dog named “Tar” and a cat named “Nicotine.” After that there were always dogs, cats, fish, birds, hamsters, and mice around.

WHAT WERE THEIR NAMES?

When I was seven I named my first hamster Raoul after the character in Phantom of the Opera, so that saved me the trouble of coming out of the closet. There was Katie the One-Eyed Wonder Dog (she lost her eye to diabetes and had to wear a pirate patch),Sigmund, Max, Molson, Soot, Caramel, Rags, Kodi, Smurf, Alice, Ralph, and Plecky the Plecostomus. That was the only fish I named, but I had a few aquariums. We also had a gay dog named McGee. He loved to bottom at the dog park.

HOW DID YOU PICK THE BREEDS FOR THE SERIES?

I really did meet a King Charles Spaniel at the park when I was a kid and have loved them ever since. They’re like little fantasy creatures. My boyfriend Kyle (who did the art direction for the series) and I came across Salukis online and were really excited to learn from our producer Nick that there was a breeder close to Toronto. I really wanted to do Persian cats, but the only breeders we could find were really shady and we didn’t want to promote them, so I switched to the Cornish Rex. Our good friend has had a couple of Rexes and they are really unlike any other cat I’ve ever met. You feel like they can see you but they can also see into other dimensions. They feel like velvet.

I HEAR YOURE ABOUT TO GET A CAT! CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THAT?

Yes! We’ve been approved to adopt a Persian cat from HelpingPersiansCats.org, a local organization in Los Angeles that rescues little sweeties and fosters them until they’re healthy enough to adopt. We haven’t yet met the one we’ll take home, but hopefully we’ll find him or her soon.

WHATS THE NEXT INSTALLMENT IN THE SERIES? Or is it a secret!!

I don’t know that there will be another one. It feels like a nice set of three. I’m sure we’ll make lots of videos of our new cat once we adopt.
