OK, I admit. I have a girl crush on Carolyn Murphy and it started when she sat with my dog Gus for a shoot…on a truck…my truck…for the cover of Australian Vogue! I knew I liked her immediately because she liked dogs…lots of dogs.
I asked Stefano Tonchi, the editor in chief of W magazine, to talk about Edward: "Edward is one of the most talented image-makers in the world. He is also one of the funniest and most creative people I have ever met. His enthusiasm for fashion and magazines is contagious. I call him “the sunshine in my life" because he can always see the positive side of things, the half full glass and never the half empty. That does not mean that he excepts mediocrity. He constantly strives for excellence but with culture and respect for others."
I made the acquaintance of this wonderful man on TUMBLR, the one platform that doesn't seem to intuitively click with Mrs. Sizzle. So I was even more pleased when this delightful photographer reached out to me to share his work with dogs.
Working in the environs of his small town of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Mark Cohen shows that you don't have to travel far to unleash a distinctive photographic vision. Cohen got closer to his subjects and looked more closely at the texture of the world around him than anyone shooting on the street had before and went on to influence countless photographers and the way we see the world. Come join us at Danziger Gallery to see this wonderful work on May 10th.
Take me out to the ball game
Take me out with the crowd
Buy me some treats and some raw hide chews
It's a long game so I might take a snooze
And it's RUFF RUFF RUFF
For the home team
If they don't win it's a shame
Aahh.
For it's one,
Two,
Three paws you're out
At the old ball game!
I went to visit the fabulous Brandon Maxwell a few weeks ago in his NYC digs. Stylist to Lady Gaga, clothing designer and magazine editor, this man had it going on with his dog. I asked him a few q's and this is what I got.
"It started with my fascination for large breeds a few years back, especially the Irish Wolfhound. I had some idea of an exhibition at the time but it did not come to pass. So I started @dogsbestman on instagram, and it proved to be quite popular, only problem was that I had run out of dog pictures after a few weeks.
My dear friend David Carriere, long time book publicist and author, was intuitive enough to introduce me to a most dynamic creative pack, and one that I would quickly come to revere - and when I say revere, well, I really mean worship. W. Bruce Cameron is the author of a multitude of bestselling books, and the one that rocked me most recently was, A Dog's Purpose, which will come to life on the silver screen in the near future with Lasse Hallstrom directing!
"Violet Delves has changed my life. She is the most loyal and beautiful companion who has a lovely calm demeanor and thinks nothing of going to the studio at all hours.
My Golden Finn as told by Donna Demari
"In 2009, I lost my two best friends. They were Labrador retrievers, brothers and their names were Luke and Forrest.
I never thought I would recover or my heart would ever heal. I wrote a book to honor their lives and I was also determined not to have another dog.
They were the loves of my life and irreplaceable.
Irene Albright is a fashion DYNAMO. Amy Lombard and I had the pleasure of visiting the library the other day to get a tour and a few licks from Gus! What an impressive place. Irene shares, "After working as a stylist for 20 years and desperately seeking wardrobe for a shoot, I decided to build my own showroom; a safe haven for all my friends who were stylists to pull their shoots." The Albright Fashion Library, since opening in 1990, has expanded and evolved into a resource for the industry’s top stylists, magazine editors and costume designers.
The dog and model du jour are none other than Brendon Beck of "Beck and Call Catering" and @Rincon_da-bully. Photographer Ysa Perez followed these two around for a day to learn the ins and outs of catering, cuteness, and mutual respect for each other.
Walking in Central Park last week I was struck by this exquisite dog, her beautiful eyes and her chic collar (of course, I am Mrs. Sizzle!). I asked her owner to tell me her story.
"I’ve always been fascinated by dog show people and their culture. While on a shoot for Ralph Lauren, one of the dog trainers asked me if I would like a ticket for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. I jumped at the opportunity to go and rolled into Madison Square Garden with my camera in hand.
SantaCon NYC is a strange yet spectacular display of holiday spirit to behold, sort of like the North Pole’s biggest outdoor party ever! Put dogs and Bark Box in the mix and you got Santa "Claws". Behold the glad doggie tidings and fun that was had by all, especially Jeff and the dog's owners!
Sophie Gamand is an animal lover, photographer, and animal activist extraordinaire.
I was lucky enough to be along for the ride last week in Brookhaven Long Island, a town that I live in and one that has a very special need which Sophie could fulfill - Pit Bull awareness - by extending her series "Flower Power, Pit Bulls of the Revolution". We visited the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, with Ashley Boyd at the helm, and over two days, Sophie was able to photograph more than 50 dogs. I was in awe!
"Bubba, Bichon-Shih Tzu, age 7-1/2, Taurus (like me), constant companion, photo muse, self-portrait partner. A gypsy by nature (or maybe that's me), road-trip navigator and shotgun-rider on three cross-country trips, favors motel hallways and elevators, lives part-time in Uruguay, afraid of horses and cats, loves chorizo. He's featured in three of my photo series (so far) and can often be found modeling on my instagram feed."
